Chapter 16
STILL PONDERING THE previous dayâs mystery messages, Leti stood on the observation deck wondering whether Faun would approve of Raisaâs exodus.
Although conflicted, deep down she knew they should not run from the fight against the Administration. Too many people needed the Resistance. Including populations living outside the city.
The morning broadcast retrieved by Franklin served to remind her of that fact. News of the Administrationâs upcoming May 20 military exercisesâpropaganda to mask the attacks on Torgum and Memphisâmeant that in two days, thousands more would experience their version of a Transition.
The thought conjured horrific memories and more than a twinge of guilt knowing she would be hiding instead of interceding on behalf of the people in those cities.
But what could one person do when no one else was willing to stand with them?
Such logic made sense to the world she inhabited, but did little to ease her conscience.
She bent over the deckâs steel railing and viewed the vast preparations underway for the relocation to Akko.
Crews loaded crates destined for the supply ships, while a handful of engineers supervised the movement of sensitive equipment needed to construct a new base near the outermost region of their mapped territory.
Michael and Franklin lingered nearby, elbows resting on the rail as they observed the action below.
Franklin pointed to a large container that was giving its handlers some difficulty. âThat right there will be essential,â he said. âThatâs the boring bot we built and programmed to develop this base. Most of what you see today was drilled and sealed in just two weeks.â
âI donât understand why Raisaâs doing this,â Michael said. âWhy would she go through the trouble of starting over, and doing it without her husband, no less? How can she so easily dismiss him and his mission?â
âItâs not like that,â Franklin said. âYou donât know all thatâs sheâs been through. All weâve been through.â
âEveryoneâs suffered since the Transition,â Michael said.
Franklin leaned over the rail and called to a crewmember below. âLet me know when youâre ready for the comms equipment. Weâre saving R&D for last.â
The man nodded and gave Franklin a thumbs up
âWhat can you tell us about that?â asked Leti.
Franklin returned his attention to their conversation. âAbout what?â
âThe Transition,â Leti said. âYesterday in the control room Maura said a lot of people died because of me. What was she talking about?â
âThe Engram. The way Maura sees it, all of thisâlosing Faun, Raisa abandoning the mission, her motherâs deathâcould have been avoided if you had brought us the Engram before the city shut down.â
âI didnât know I had it. How could I bring you something I didnât know existed?â
âI get it. But if we had the data three years ago, we might have stopped the Administrator before he could mobilize such a large force against us.â
And before so many neighbors and friends were executed.
She crumbled inside, crushed by the weight of a responsibility she had not even known she carried. She knew the guilt was not hers to bear. But she felt it just the same.
